With the startling amount of free time the pandemic has given us, it has also given us the chance to grow out passions and pick up hobbies. I talked to Sophomore Giacomo C. about his dive into the world of photography this past year.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
How did you get started taking photos?
I started taking photos as a hobby over quarantine, but over the pandemic, I’ve really gotten deeper into the world of photography. My dad had a Canon Rebel T5I, and so I picked it up. Even though I started taking photos during lock down, I remember telling my dad in sixth grade that I wanted to be a photographer. I made that dream come true last year.
What’s your process? Do you take pictures of anything, things that just look cool, or are you approaching it with a specific result in mind?
I take my camera practically everywhere I go. I just like taking photos of my friends and architecture.
What is it about photography that you like? Are you an artistic person in general, or is it just photography?
I like photography because it helps me channel my creativity. I’ve tried my hand at music and drawings but they just weren’t right for me. So I turned to photography and let my mind run free.
Any tips for people wanting to take better photos?
A tip for taking good photos is to remember that just like everything, photography takes practice. Over the summer I took an online photography class and FAILED it. Just get to know your camera and then you’ll start to create great photos and get astonishing results.
What’s next in photography for you?
I’m still using my dad’s Canon camera, but over the summer I’ll be working and saving up for my own camera to continue my journey in photography.
